Last saturday race in Kortrijk was more disputed, with Brand (Baloise Trek Lions), Alvarado (Alpecin Fenix) and Betsema (Pauwels Sauzen Bingoal) leading the race till the last lap, when the rainbow jersey left behind her two companions, while Antwerp champion Shana Maes (Tormans) crossed the line in 25th position. But the next day at the world cup in Besançon Ceylin Del Carmen Alvarado, who seemed to have reached the level that gave her sop many vitories last season, could not race due to a back pain, so Lucinda Brand gave it all from the begining winning again with almost a half minute over the second one, the canadian and panamerican champion Maghalie Rochette, and once again Betsema as third.

So the weekend was for the two two belgian riders, but if at Kortrijk Toon Aerts ended with more distance over his opponents, the duel in Besançon with Eli Iserbyt was epic till the last lap, with both riders taking risk and falls in the sleepery Besançon circuit, where even Aerts tried to tackle his rival with no result just in the moment when Iserbyt could obtaine his definitve advantage to win.

Under the dutch rider Corné Van Kessel perspective “Before the season I determined that my main focus would be on the races of the X2O Trophy. It’s nice to achieve my first podium of the season here in Kortrijk, especially taking into account the level of riders here at the start. The circuit here in Kortrijk has always been very fast the previous years, so the hard conditions in this edition were a surprise for everyone. The heavy rainfall in the morning created a lot of mud, which dried up during the day and really stuck to the bike. But that’s how I like it!”. After two races, the Dutchman is now 3rd in the X2O Trophy.

Back to Besançon, the spanish champion Felipe Orts (Burgos BH) recovered his good sensations with an 11th position. The flat terrain allowed the line of cyclists to lengthen before the end of the second lap and Orts found himself in a chasing group with rivals who would not give up the slightest advantage.

After a few hectic first laps, Orts managed his forces and was able to lead the quartet in difficult stretches due to the hardness of the mud. The small group struggled to enter the top-10, made their way and did not give an option to surprises until the final duel. On the finish line, Felipe Orts emptied himself to reach 11th place, which is his best result in the current World Cup series and which almost doubles his number of points on the balance sheet.

Upon crossing the finish line, Orts affirmed that he found himself “very well and happy, the circuit was brutal and I enjoyed a lot. A shame to stay at the gates of the top-10, but I have fought till the end. It was one of these World Cup events a little different from being outside Belgium, so finally I took a good sum of UCI points seeing myself competing with the best riders” he declared.

Next saturday the second half of the Superprestige races will be held in Boom, with a very complete circuit with rolling areas, small slopes, cobbled sections and a sandbar. On Sunday the difficulty increases in the Antwerp World Cup where the route is characterized by being very technical with narrower sections than usual, more sandboxes and constant turns that will favor skirmishes.
