Nokere Koerse to be held next March 16th in a renewed route

The race raised the prize money of the women’s race to the level of the men

This spring cobbles classic was held for the first time in 1944 and it will be the third edition of the women’s race, after the victories of Lorena Wiebes in 2019 and the great Amy Pieters last year. In addition to the equality at the prizes, the women’s race will have its own live broadcast.

The chairman of the classic Robrecht Bothuyne has remarked that“we are working on an own identity for our races. The finish on Nokereberg is already unique; there is no other one-day race that arrives on top of a cobblestone hill. And Nokereberg will remain the common thread. But cobblestones will be that much more. Danilith Nokere Koerse is deliberately not racing after the Tour of Flanders and other spring races, but chooses its own profile”.

Gil Steyvers, the race director for the women explains that “the women’s race is largely on the same roads, although with fewer local laps. In total the women cycle is 126 kilometers. There is also a good portion of 15 kilometers of cobblestones. The women will have nine hills in front of their wheels and will have to climb a total of 800 meters. It is a challenging course, but also a safe one. We avoid dangerous roads and provide adequate signaling & security where necessary. Each team also receives a fully detailed safety manual in which every square meter of the course is mapped out. Teams and riders can thus assess any risks beforehand. Safety is essential to us”.

The start will be on the market square in Deinze, followed by a long ride of about 100 kilometers that will take the riders past Nazareth, Gavere, Zingem, Zwalm, Oudenaarde, Wortegem-Petegem and Anzegem towards Nokere.

The director of the men’s race Rony De Sloovere presents the new route of this year saying that “we’re bringing a number of new hills in the course; such as the well-known Wolvenberg, but also the still unknown Petegemberg. Together with the cobblestones of the Varent, Herlegemstraat, Lange Ast, Huisepontweg and Nokereberg, for example, the course will be quite selective. In total the riders will have 1171 altimeters, spread over 13 hills, of which 9 with cobblestones. Those cobblestones color our race: no less than 25 kilometers of Danilith Nokere Koerse consists of cobblestones. They are largely on the local circuit through the Kruisem boroughs. We are limiting the distance of the race to 189 kilometers. We want to make it an attractive race”.
